First ratification of the Escazú Agreement

By depositing its instrument of ratification with the Treaty Section of the Office of Legal Affairs of the United Nations in New York, the Co-operative Republic of Guyana became the first country to ratify the Escazú Agreement on 18 April 2019

Observatory on Principle 10 in Latin America and the Caribbean revamps section on Resources

As part of its new design, the Observatory on Principle 10 in Latin America and the Caribbean, launched on the occasion of the first anniversary of the adoption of the Escazú Agreement, has revamped its section on resources where users will find infographics, maps and other graphic material on access rights in environmental matters in the region.

 

Worth noting are a map on climate change laws and an infographic on the Escazú Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals. 

The Escazú Agreement at the third Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development

The Escazú Agreement will be discussed in several events in the framework of the third meeting of the Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development, a mechanism gathering representatives of Governments, international bodies, the private sector, academia and civil society between 22 and 26 April at ECLAC headquarters in Santiago, Chile.

 

 

The Forum was established in 2016 as a regional mechanism for the follow-up and review of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development, its goals, means of implementation and the Addis Ababa Agenda on Financing for Sustainable Development. 

 

Events:

 

Wednesday, 24 April (1-2:30pm): Side event “Escazú Agreement: A tool to empower people and ensure inclusiveness and equality”.

 

Thursday, 25 April (8:30am-4:30pm): Regional meeting on progress and challenges in the implementation of the Escazú Agreement in Latin America and the Caribbean: towards an early entry into force

 

Friday, 26 April (1-2:30pm): Side event  “Improving accountability and involving National Human Rights Institutions in the 2030 Agenda”

 

Accreditation in the Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development is required to participate in the aforementioned.

 

 

United Nations Human Rights Council adopts landmark resolution on environmental human rights defenders

In its 40th Session, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted without a vote Resolution A/HRC/40/L.22/Rev.1 “Recognizing the contribution of environmental human rights defenders to the enjoyment of human rights, environmental protection and sustainable development."

In the resolution, the Council expressed grave concern at the situation of environmental human rights defenders around the world, and strongly condemned the killing of and all other human rights violations or abuses against environmental human rights defenders by State and non-State actors. It also stressed that human rights defenders, including environmental human rights defenders, must be ensured a safe and enabling environment to undertake their work free from hindrance and insecurity.

 

Moreover, the Council noted with appreciation international instruments, such as the Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean ( Escazú Agreement), for the protection of environmental human rights defenders.
