Saint Lucia ratifies the Escazú Agreement

The Caribbean country deposited its instrument of ratification with the United Nations Secretary-General on 1 December 2020.

 

In a press release issued by the Government of Saint Lucia, Minister with responsibility for Sustainable Development, Honourable Dr. Gale T.C. Rigobert, said that "the ratification of the Escazú Agreement will signal to all Saint Lucians the government’s unwavering commitment to sustainable development, human rights and environmental justice for all."

The second meeting of the signatory countries to the Escazú Agreement took place virtually on 9 and 10 December under the auspices of the Government of Antigua and Barbuda. 

 

At the meeting, delegates of the signatory countries and representatives of the public resumed discussions on the matters to be dealt with at the first Conference of the Parties.

 

Furthermore, two high-level panels were held on the occasion of International Human Rights Defenders Day (9 December) and International Human Rights Day (10 December), with the participation of high authorities of countries of the region, renowned experts and representatives of international bodies, the private sector, youth and environmental defenders.

 

A special session on cooperation also took place where more than 20 international organizations and stakeholders expressed their support to the Escazú Agreement. 

 

The meeting was preceded by an in person national workshop on 8 December.

Young People from Latin America and the Caribbean Reaffirm their Commitment to Environmental Protection and the Escazú Agreement

Youth from more than 19 Latin American and Caribbean countries met on 8 December at a virtual gathering to reaffirm their commitment to environmental protection and the Escazú Agreement, in the run-up to the Second Meeting of the Signatory Countries.

 

The event entitled “Youth for Escazú” was organized jointly by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), with the support of numerous civil society organizations.
