The Escazú Agreement will enter into force on 22 April 2021

Having met the conditions under article 22, the Escazú Agreement will enter into force on 22 April 2021, International Mother Earth Day. 

The United Nations Secretary-General, in his capacity as depositary of the Agreement, issued the corresponding  notification informing all Member States.

Argentina and Mexico ratify the Escazú Agreement

On 22 January 2021, the Governments of Argentina and Mexico deposited their instruments of ratification at United Nations Headquarters in New York.. 

To celebrate the foregoing, the Government of Mexico organized a  Ceremony for the deposit of the instrument of ratification to the Escazú Agreement, led by Martha Delgado, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, with the participation of the Executive Secretary of ECLAC, Alicia Bárcena.

The Executive Secretary of ECLAC recognized the strong commitment of both Governments and highlighted the other countries that ratified previously and made entry into force possible next 22 April.

#Escazú4All / #EscazúParaTodxs campaign is launched

On 4 March 2021 the social media campaign #Escazú4All was launched celebrating the third anniversary of the adoption of the Escazú Agreement and announcing its entry into force on 22 April.

In the framework of the same, everyone is invited to upload 1 minute videos to their personal and institutional accounts on social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.), celebrating the relevance of the Escazú Agreement for a fairer and more sustainable development and inviting others to do the same.

The campaign will run until 22 April, day of the entry into force of the agreement.

Given that both 4 March and 22 April are Thursdays, the hashtag #ThursdaysforEscazú can be used and the campaign can be strengthened on Thursdays.

The Escazú Agreement is highlighted in national and regional events

The Secretariat co-organized the  Virtual Forum: What is the status of the Escazú Agreement in Honduras and the Latin American region on 26 January 2021.

The Escazú Agreement was also highlighted in the following activities:

- Colombia: "El Acuerdo de Escazú y su aplicación en la práctica de la democracia ambiental" (4 February 2021)

- Mexico:  "Implicaciones de la ratificación por parte de México del Acuerdo de Escazú" (25 February 2021)

- Regional workshop: " Aprovechando las experiencias de las INDH para fortalecer su papel en los procesos nacionales de desarrollo sostenible” (10 February 2021)
