On 22 April 2021, authorities from the governments that have signed and ratified the Escazú Agreement along with representatives of international organizations, the public and civil society took part in a virtual day of celebrations.
The event was opened by ECLAC’s Executive Secretary, Alicia Bárcena, and Epsy Campbell, Vice President of Costa Rica. Subsequently, a High-level Dialogue took place that included the participation of António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General (via a message); Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of Guyana; and foreign ministers, ministers and high-level authorities from the other States Parties.
The day of celebrations continued with three panels that addressed the history of the treaty, in which participants recalled six years of meetings and negotiations; the role of youth in the Agreement; and environmental defenders and the Escazú Agreement.
