Belize and Grenada ratify the Escazú Agreement

Belize and Grenada became the fourteenth and fifteenth State Parties, respectively, to the Escazú Agreement. 

 

The Central American country deposited its instrument of ratification with the Secretary-General of the United Nations on 7 March 2023, whereas the Caribbean country did so on the 20th of that same month. 

 

As a result, the Escazú Agreement now has 24 signatory countries and 15 States Parties. The Agreement is open to the 33 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.

 

Argentina will host the Second Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Escazú Agreement (COP2)

The second meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 2) to the Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean – known as the Escazú Agreement – will take place on April 19-21 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

 

This was confirmed by the host country agreement signed between José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and Santiago Cafiero, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Argentina, last Saturday, 25 March in the framework of the XXVIII Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, held in the Dominican Republic.

 

At the COP 2 of the Escazú Agreement, which is an extraordinary meeting, authorities and official representatives of the countries that are already Parties to the region’s first environmental treaty will elect the inaugural members of the Committee to Support Implementation and Compliance of the treaty and consider any other matter decided by the Parties.

COP2, an extraordinary meeting, will take place in person between 19-21 April 2023 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The aim of the meeting will be to elect the inaugural members of the Committee to Support Implementation and Compliance and consider any other matter decided by the Parties.

 

REGIONAL DIALOGUE AND SPECIAL SESSIONS

Within the framework of COP2, together with the official activities, a regional dialogue will be held to strengthen capacities for national implementation as well as three special face-to-face sessions, of an informative nature, on bodies that support the application and compliance and follow-up to the decisions I/4 and I/6 of the COP. OFFICIAL SIDE EVENTS

The Secretariat is pleased to inform that a total of 43 applications for official side events were received. We thank all applicants and invite the public to learn about the selected official side events that will soon be available on the Conference page.

 

REGISTRATION OF THE PUBLIC

Considering that the room capacity at the venue of the event is limited and that the number of registrations highly exceeded such available space, we regret to inform that the registration for the public is closed. There is a waiting list of people who registered in time, which will be confirmed as spaces become available, following the order of registration and until the available places are filled. The Secretariat is making every effort to accommodate as many people as possible. 

 

We kindly request that those persons registered and confirmed who will not be attending so notify the Secretariat (secretaria.escazu@cepal.org) as soon as possible in order to release additional spaces.

 

LIVE BROADCAST

Candidates to the Committee to Support Implementation and Compliance take part in interactive dialogue during the virtual preparatory meeting (PreCOP)

The preparatory meeting for the second meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Escazú Agreement (pre-COP) took place virtually on 6 March 2023, between 11.00 am and 1:30 pm Chilean time.

 

In the framework of the preCOP, an interactive dialogue with the 10 candidates included in the roster prepared by the Presiding Officers was held.
