The Escazú Agreement at COP25

The Escazú Agreement will be highlighted in several events in the framework of the 25 ^th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The complete list is available at:

Monday, 2 December 2019

• 2-3pm.  Side event  "International Instruments on Public Participation in Environmental Governance and Relevance to the Paris Agreement Implementation and the COP-25" (IFEMA, Meeting Room 15). Organized by CIEL, La Ruta del Clima and the Governments of Costa Rica, France and Uruguay.

Thursday, 5 December 2019

• 4-5pm.  "Juventudes de Latinoamérica y el Caribe y el vínculo entre cambio climático y derechos humanos para no dejar a nadie atrás" (IFEMA, Green Zone, Zone 1 Youth). Organized by the Millennials Movement.

Friday, 6 December 2019

• 12:30-2pm.  Side event  "Public Participation in Climate Decisions/Climate action and the Escazu Agreement" (IFEMA, Room Brussels). Organized by La Ruta del Clima and CIEL.
• 2-3:30pm.  Side event  "Crisis climática, derechos emergentes y responsabilidades universales: por una guardianía planetaria" (Pabellón Euroclima+). • 9:30-10am.  Launching of the book "Climate change and human rights: contributions by and for Latin America and the Caribbean" (Pabellón Euroclima+). Organized by ECLAC and OHCHR. 
• 6:30-8pm.  ONE UN Side event SDG 16 "Realizing the right to participate: empowering people as agents of more effective climate action" (IFEMA, Room 6). Organized by OHCHR, UNICEF, with support from ECLAC, UN Environment, ILO, UN Women and CBD.

• 9am-5pm.  InforMEA Stand: "Collective contribution by Multilateral Environmental Agreements to climate action" (IFEMA, Booth 22). Organized by InforMEA with support from ECLAC and MEA Secretariats.  Online course: "Introductory course on SDG 16 and access rights, the Aarhus Convention and the Escazú Agreement" (UN Environment, ECLAC and UNECE). 
• 11:30am-1pm.  Side event "Advancing Paris Agreement goals through environmental democracy in Latin America and the Caribbean" (IFEMA, Room 1). Organized by ECLAC, WRI, CIVICUS, FIMA, DAR and FARN. 

First meeting of the signatories to the Escazú Agreement takes place in Costa Rica

Signatories and State Parties to the Escazú Agreement held the first meeting of the signatories to the treaty on 11 and 12 October 2019 in San José, Costa Rica. 

Countries analyzed the matters to be discussed at the first meeting of the Conference of the Parties, as well as strategies and partnerships for the prompt entry into force and implementation of the legal instrument.

Participants agreed to redouble efforts to bring about the prompt entry into effect of the Agreement and continue working to make progress on the topics to be addressed. They also invited all countries of the region to join the Agreement.

Countries sign and ratify the Escazú Agreement during ceremony held at the UN General Assembly

A high-level ceremony was organized in the framework of the 74th United Nations General Assembly in New York. Four countries signed the Agreement and four deposited their instruments of ratification. Bolivia, Grenada, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Uruguay were represented by their Ministers of Foreign Affairs.

The Escazú Agreement is highlighted in national and regional activities 

The Escazú Agreement was highlighted in several activities:

• Regional: Preparatory meeting of the Forum of Ministers of Environment of Latin America and the Caribbean (Barbados, 5 and 6 November 2019)
• Argentina: Session to promote the early ratification of the Escazú Agreement at the Senate (21 November 2019)

• Paraguay: Congress on forest law and session on the Escazú Agreement for jurists (2 and 3 December 2019)
• Saint Vincent and the Grenadines: meetings with Government and civil society on the implementation of the Escazú Agreement (7 and 8 November 2019)
• Saint Lucia: Seminar for Public Officials and Civil Society Representatives on the Escazú Agreement and the 2030 Agenda and session with youth on the Escazú Agreement (11 November 2019)
• Trinidad and Tobago: Second regional seminar for Parliaments of the Caribbean: strengthening parliamentary action on the Sustainable Development Goals (5 and 6 December 2019)

Furthermore, at the first meeting of the signatories to the Escazú Agreement, the version in quechua of the agreement was presented with the Government of Peru and DAR.
