ECLAC and the OECS Establish an Enhanced Programme of Action on the Escazú Agreement in the Eastern Caribbean

The Executive Secretary of United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Ms. Alicia Bárcena, and the Director-General of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), Dr. Didacus Jules, signed a Memorandum of Understanding establishing an “Enhanced Programme of Action on the Escazú Agreement in the Eastern Caribbean.”

 

Through this Programme, both institutions agreed on a framework for enhanced cooperation and understanding to assist OECS Member States achieve the environmental dimension of sustainable development through the Escazú Agreement.

Public participation and access to information and knowledge are essential to design and apply effective climate policies. The Escazú Agreement is an unprecedented tool to catalyse climate governance and action in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Webinar "The significant participation of the public in the Escazú Agreement in preparation for its entry into force: proposals and inputs"

The elected representatives of the public and ECLAC invite the public to participate in the discussions to draft proposals for the significant participation of the public in the implementation of the Escazú Agreement.

 

 

To that end, two webinars will be held where the representatives of the public will share their preliminary proposals and inputs received by persons and organizations from the Latin American and Caribbean region.

 

The virtual sessions will take place as follows:

International Day for Biological Diversity (22 May): The Escazú Agreement is essential to find nature-based solutions

On the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity (22 May), we recall the importance of access rights to sustainably preserve and manage our natural heritage. ECLAC supports the call for nature-based solutions, which require the generation and dissemination of knowledge on our environment and the active engagement of all sectors of society.

 

To add to the conversation, ECLAC invites you to read its publication  "Biodiversity compensation and its application to mining: the cases of Argentina, Bolivia (Plur. State of), Chile, Colombia and Peru" (in Spanish). The latter presents the potential of biodiversity offsets using the mining sector in the Andean region as a case study.
